Penyengat Island

Penyengat Island

Penyengat Island

Penyengat Island is a small island situated across Tanjung Pinang, capital of the Riau Islands Province. Today, the Sultan’s palace (which build in 19th century) at Penyengat Island is being restored. It is an interesting blend of Dutch and Javanese architecture, still imbued with an air of dignity, even though it has been abandoned for more than 80 years.

The island’s popular attraction comes in the form of the wondrous Sultan of Riau Grand Mosque, which was built using a mixture of lime and egg white as cement. Peeping through the palm trees like a fairy tale castle, it is still in use today. Visitors may also see the beautifully preserved handwritten and illustrated Quran of over 150 years old here.
